About this role
The Assistant General Manager is responsible for leading the day-to-day operations of the business in the absence of the General Manager and to support the General Manager in all facets of the of running the facility. This role requires a hands-on leader with extensive marina, boatyard, or shipyard experience who can build strong relationships across a large workforce, drive operational excellence, improve business processes, and support strategic growth initiatives. The Assistant General Manager plays a critical role in optimizing organizational structure, prioritizing resources, managing major project schedules, identifying new revenue opportunities, and ensuring exceptional customer service, employee engagement, safety, and financial performance throughout the facility.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
· Lead day-to-day operations and management of the business in the absence of the General Manager
· Manage maintenance work done throughout the facility to ensure safe and acceptable property and equipment, as well as esthetics appearance
· Develop and implement process improvements that enhance productivity, reduce costs, improve turnaround times, and support business growth.
· Collaborate with department leaders to prioritize operational initiatives and ensure resources are effectively deployed to meet business goals.
· Assist in identifying and developing new revenue-generating opportunities, including service offerings, storage solutions, project work, and customer programs.
· Support strategic business planning through financial forecasting, operational analysis, and performance tracking.
· Oversee scheduling and coordination of major vessel projects, ensuring timelines, staffing, equipment, and customer expectations are effectively managed.
· Monitor project progress, profitability, and resource utilization to ensure successful project delivery and financial performance.
· Manage sales, facilities, and guest relations effectively
· Sustain and optimize profitability, performance and guest satisfaction
· Assist General Manager with budgets, inventory control, and accounting principles of business
· Maintain positive relationships with tenants, contractors, and local authorities
· Comply with OSHA, EPA, DEEP and Department of Labor rules and regulations
· Provide leadership and direction across multiple departments to ensure alignment with operational, financial, and customer service objectives
· Leverage extensive marina, boatyard, or shipyard operations experience to optimize facility performance, vessel service operations, and project execution
· Other duties as assigned by Manager
Safety and Environmental Responsibilities
· Follow SHM Safety and Environmental rules and complete required related training.
· Wear proper personal protective equipment (may include safety glasses, gloves, life jackets and/or hard hats) as required for the task or work area.
· Report all accidents, injuries, spills and near misses immediately.
Technical and Physical Requirements
· High school diploma or equivalent required
· Associate or Bachelor’s Degree preferred
· 5 – 7 years’ relevant experience preferred
· Proficient in Microsoft Office
· CMM certification a plus
· Demonstrated experience managing large teams and leading cross-functional operations
· Proven success in business process improvement, organizational development, and operational efficiency initiatives
· Experience with project forecasting, resource planning, and scheduling of large-scale marine service or construction projects
· Strong financial acumen with experience in budgeting, forecasting, P&L management, and revenue growth strategies
· Excellent leadership, communication, conflict resolution, and team-building skills
· Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time
· Any skills considered standard that a Assistant General Manager should possess
